Is Replacing My Roof Going to Take Long?
Clients often ask, “How long will it take to replace my roof?” We understand – replacing your roof is an important but major undertaking.
You may be wondering the same thing.
Most roof replacements take one to three days on an average 3,000 square feet or less house. Let’s look at how long replacing your roof will take.
What Determines How Long Roof Replacement Takes?

Number 1 is the Size and Complexity of Your Roof A significant factor in roof replacement is the size of your roof. The roof on a small shed can be replaced much faster than the roof on a large industrial building like a warehouse.
Complex roof designs means roofs with many hips, valleys, and dormers (little windows), will take longer because the work is more complicated and takes longer to perform. A hip roof (or hipped roof) is a type of roof design where all roof sides slope downward toward the walls – where the walls of the house sit under the eaves.
Roofs with a higher pitch take more time because higher pitched roofs are harder to stand and work on. The roofers must be careful and move slower, making the roofing process longer.
The Weather
Another consideration is the weather. Roofers obviously can’t work in the dark, so they will need to work in the daylight hours. If you’re getting your roof replaced in winter when the days are shorter, there’ll be less daylight to work.
Roofers also can’t work in the rain because it is dangerous. Roofers could more easily slip and fall. If work begins and it starts to rain, work will have to be suspended. A good roofing company will cover your roof with a tarp and work will continue when it’s dry again. You should not expect your roof to be replaced in the rain, snow, freezing temperatures, or extreme heat.
Since the weather affects the time it takes to replace your roof, your roofing company should work with you to plan the best time to do this project.
Accessibility to Your Roof
How easy is it for the roofers and their equipment to access your house and roof? If your home is close to other homes, surrounded by bushes, trees, fencing, or other obstacles, the roofers will have to work around them, which will add time to the job.
Structural Damage
If your roofing company starts tearing off your old roof and discovers underlying damage, repairs will have to be made before work can continue.
Roofing Materials and Design
Your roofing materials and the design you choose contribute to how long your roof replacement will take.
Here is a list of some roofing materials and how long it takes to install them. These are for a typical roof replacement.
• Metal (steel, Galvalume®, aluminum, copper) | 1-2 days
• Asphalt shingles | 1-3 days
• Wooden shingles | 6-8 days
• Slate tiles | 6-7 days
• Concrete tiles | 8-9 days
How you want the shingles arranged plays a factor because more complex designs and patterns take longer.
